
Fisheries Training Institute to celebrate 50 Years of Quality Training
The Fisheries Training Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries will be commemorating 50 years of quality training in Uganda on the 5th of October 2018 at the Institute premises in Entebbe.

In a build-up to the event, administration and students of the Institute were engaged in activities of Corporate Social Responsibility which included cleaning in Entebbe town as well as the landing sites in Entebbe.
The activities were flagged off by Dr. Edward Rukunya the Director for Fisheries Resources who represented Hon. Vincent Bamulangaki Sempijja the Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.
Dr. Rukunya who was welcomed at the Institute by Ms. Gertrude Abalo the Principal was accompanied by Mr. Herbert Kiguli the Commissioner for Human Resource Development and Ms. Grace Nalumu the Assistant Commissioner for Human Resource Development.

This Institute which is under the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries was established by an Act of Parliament (Uganda) under the then Ministry of Animal Industry, Game and Fisheries. Its foundation stone was laid on 27th June 1966. The official opening of the Institute was done on 23rd February 1968. It was put in place as a Regional Institute and still stands so today having groomed thousands of experts.

The institute, whose vision is “To be an Institution of professional excellence in Fisheries Management, Training, Research and Marine Safety” is guided by the mission “To produce competent Fisheries Managers and Practitioners and promote Marine Safety for sustainable socio-economic development.”

About the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF)
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is a Ministry in the Government of Uganda charged with creating an enabling environment in the Agricultural Sector.
The Ministry formulates, reviews and implement national policies, plans, strategies, regulations and standards and enforce laws, regulations and standards along the value chain of crops, livestock and fisheries.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is made up of four Directorates including the Directorate of Crop Resources, Directorate of Animal Resources, Directorate of Agricultural Extension Services and the Directorate of Fisheries Resources each with Departments, Divisions and Partnership Projects.
The Departments of the Ministry which do not fall directly in the above include the Department of Agricultural Planning and Development, the Human Resource Department, the Department of Finance and Administration and the Department of Agricultural Infrastructure, Mechanisation and Water for Agricultural Production.
The Ministry is also made up of seven Agencies including the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS), Cotton Development Organisation (CDO), Dairy Development Authority (DDA), Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and Coordinating Office for the Control of Trypanosomiasis in Uganda (COCTU) and the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB).
The Ministry also supports agricultural education and training through training institutes such as the National Farmers Leadership Training Center in Kampingirisa and the Fisheries Training Institute in Entebbe among others.
