Ministry of Agriculture vows to strengthen ties with Egypt through trade in Animals and Animal Products

Uganda and Egypt have committed to ramping up their cooperation in the beef industry a move that will see the East African nation’s exports increase.  The commitments were made on Friday July 23rd, 2021 when the Egyptian delegation led by Brigadier Maged Ibrahim Ali from the National Service Projects Organization (NSPO) met with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) Officials led by the minister of state for Animal Industry Hon. Lt. Col. (Rtd) Rwamirama Bright in Entebbe.

During the meeting, Hon Rwamirama informed the Egyptian delegation that Uganda had a large livestock population and livestock farmers in Uganda reared a wide range of animals ranging from cattle (15 million), goats (17 million), Sheep (5.5 million), pigs (6 million), among others.

“In the crops sector, we have a lot of food here. We are blessed as a country and most food crops flourish here.  So since our brothers are here to partner with us, we need to look into what we have and focus on what we want to achieve,” said Hon Rwamirama who recognized the presence of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) which is the commercial arm of the UPDF and its Egyptian equivalent the National Service Projects Organization (NSPO).

The Egyptians were on a reciprocal visit after Gen James Mugira the managing director of NEC led a Ugandan delegation that visited Egypt in March, 2021.  In the meeting, NEC and NSPO discussed modalities of setting a larvacide and animal production factory in Uganda.

After Friday’s deliberations, the meeting led by Hon Rwamirama resolved that the Ministry will provide technical guidance in the entire value chain of NSPO investments, that the government of Uganda will through MAAIF ensure that international trade standards are maintained and that both players would open dialogue on collaboration on the animal vaccine and animal drugs interventions.

Hon. Rwamirama, personally, pledged to give support to the NEC –  NSPO project collaborations to their successful fruition.
